Outside AC Unit Buzzing but the Fan Won't Spin

A loud buzzing noise from your outside AC unit while the fan isn't spinning usually indicates a failed capacitor or a seized fan motor.

The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the electrical boost they need to start. When it fails, the motors try to start but can't, and you hear a hum or buzz.

Capacitors often fail in Tampa's extreme summer heat because of the electrical strain of constant cycling. A seized fan motor, often from worn bearings, produces the same symptom.

If the fan isn't spinning, heat can't be released from your home. Left running, the system can overheat and suffer a costly total system failure.

Fleet of Climate Control Systems of Tampa Inc. service vans ready for 24/7 emergency AC repair and HVAC installation across Tampa Bay.

WHAT TO DO

Turn the system off at the thermostat to stop the motors from straining.

Don't try to push the fan blades or open the electrical panel; capacitors store a charge even with the power off and should be handled by a technician.

Call our 24/7 emergency AC repair team or schedule AC repair and diagnostics. Replacing a failed capacitor promptly can prevent compressor damage.

Biannual tune-ups through a maintenance plan test capacitors and motors before they fail. More answers on our FAQ page.
